Fred WelterHatha Floor Yoga
and
Yoga Foot Reflexology
Practicing and teaching since 1975.
Fred first became interested in yoga at the age of 31 while watching Lilias Folan in her PBS series, "Lilias! Yoga and You" shown in 1975. That was rapidly followed by a personal practice blended from her televised example and the third section of a book, "Remember, Be Here Now" describing various techniques for yoga, pranayama, and meditation.
Bumping into yoga at this time was sort of a "next step" in a lifetime of spiritual pursuit beginning at about age 8 while looking at the stars and wondering "Why are we here?" That question along with, "Is the speed of light a constant" and "What are the limits of the universe" became core questions for the next 30 or so years. His present interest is understanding the interconnectedness of science and spirituality; a concept recently made accessible and popular by the movie, "What the (bleep) Do We Know".
Educated as a scientist/engineer to help win the race to the moon, Fred started work in 1966 on the Apollo Program for The Boeing Company and retired last year from Lockheed Martin's contract to modernize our nation's launch range. Since his life goal was and is to walk a balance between the worlds of science and spirituality his years from 1969 to 1975 were spent in the study and practice of "Mind Travel" (a guided meditation technique of Rosicrucian and Masonic origin), Transcendental Meditation, and Astrology.
Moving from Cocoa Beach, Florida to Columbus, Ohio and various other locations needed to retain employment as an engineer brought him into contact with the 3HO Organization and the Yogi Bhajan style of Kundalini Yoga as taught by the Sikhs in Ashrams of Columbus, Ohio; Phoenix, Arizona; and Altamonte Springs, Florida; including a special workshop on White Tantric Yoga taught by Yogi Bhajan himself in Atlanta, Georgia in 1985.
The sikhs taught foot reflexology and massage as a complement to their yoga practice. Limited to working on friends and family, Fred became a certified Reflexologist at the request of a DeLand, Florida chiropractor who had patients in Cassadaga requesting that service. This relationship provided an exposure to Psychic Mediumship from 1979 to 1984. During this same time frame Fred taught yoga for the Daytona Beach Community College Adjunct Campus in DeLand. From 1987 to 1991 Fred taught yoga at the Flagler Fitness Center in Palm Coast.
Father of seven children, putting them through college, and grandfather of 13 grandchildren (changing diapers as this is being written) and driving to Patrick Air Force Base for the last ten years; not much yoga was happening in Fred's life until Micki Higgins found him struggling in the back of a Fitness One class this April, 2010.
